Crochet dog barrettes for the holidays

a

If you've ever priced hair decorations for your favorite pooch, you probably were shocked by the high prices. I've designed eight doggy barrettes using hair clips from the drug store, acrylic gem stones, tinsel pom-poms , scrap yarn and simple crochet stitches. Fido will look so chic in his new doo-dads and they will have cost you just a fraction of what the groomer charges.

Crochet First Holy Communion Cape in the Wheat Stitch

The wheat spray, a symbol for The Bread of Life or Communion is interpreted in a fancy crochet stitch. A First Holy Communion is a special event in a Christian girl's life. Here is a beautiful cape design with wheat sprays that you can crochet and that will serve to remind the recipient that when bread is broken and shared, it bonds us together as human beings.
I designed this cape using less than a skein of easily available worsted weight yarn. It will fit girls between the ages of 7-12.

At the end of the pattern is a photo tutorial that I made to help you complete the project

Materials:
- 5 ounces of worsted weight yarn (#4). I used Bernat Super Value. It's a 7 ounce skein so ypul' have 2 ounces left.
- An aluminum crochet hook size I/5.5mm
- Gauge: 3 sc in a row = 1 inch

Special Stitch:
3 tr cl: Treble cluster-Yarn over twice, insert hook in indicated stitch and draw up a loop, [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice (2 loops on hook); *yarn over twice, insert hook in same stitch and draw up a loop, [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice; repeat from * once more; yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook. ( in other words, holding back on hook last loop of each tr, tr in next 3 tr, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook [cluster made] )

Instructions:

Row 1: Starting at the neckline, 58 to measure about 15 inches.
Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (57 sc). Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3 A: (Short Row) Sc in each of next 2 sc, tr in next sc, sc in each of next 2 sc ch 1 turn;

Row 3 B: (Short Row) sc in each of next 5 sts (this forms the tab for button on at left side edge of cape). Ch 1, turn;

Row 3 C: (Long Row) sc in each of next 5 sc, ch 3, skip 3 sc; in next sc make (tr, ch 3,tr)-- V-st made; * ch 3, skip 3 sc, tr in next sc; ch 3, skip 3 sc, V-st in next sc. Repeat from * to last 8 sc, ch 3, skip 3 sc, tr in each of last 5 sc to begin border . 6 V-stitches with a tr in between and 5 tr for the border. Turn

Row 4: Sl st in first tr, ch 4 to count as first tr, tr in each of next 4 tr (border); ch 3, make V-st in next V-st, * ch 3; in next tr make ( 3 tr, ch 3, 1 tr, ch 3, and 3 tr )--wheat spray started; ch 3, V-st in next V-st. Repeat from * 4 times more, (5 wheat sprays); ch 3, tr in each of next 5 sc (border). turn.

Row 5: Sl st in first tr, ch 4 to count as first tr, tr in each of next 4 tr (border); ch 3, V-st in V-st, * ch 3; 3 tr cl over next 3 tr---leaf; ch 3, start wheat spray in the single tr; ch 3, 3 tr cl over next 3 tr---leaf; ch 3, V-st in next V-st. Repeat from * across, ch 3, tr in each of next 4 tr, tr in top of ch-4 (border).turn.

Rows 6 through 11: Repeat Row 5. Be careful to work the spray in the single tr and do the clusters over the 3 trs. Sometimes it's easy to miss the 2nd cluster, so, again be careful.

Row 12: This is the row that will close the wheat stalk. Sl st in first tr, ch 4 to count as first tr, tr in each of next 4 tr (border); ch 3, in next V-st make V-st, ch 3 and tr (double V-st made); * ch 3, cluster over next 3 tr; ch 5, 3 tr in single tr; ch 5, cluster over next 3 tr; ch 3, in next V-st make Double V.
