Sometimes, crochet patterns appear more difficult but if you
know the secret, they can be demystified. This is the case with the Lace
Scallop. Originally an edging worked in thread that was sewn onto pillowcases,
hand towels and handkerchiefs; today's modern needle worker has the advantage
of thick yarns and fat hooks to make shawls and afghans from this unusual
motif. By working a single practice unit, you'll discover many uses for this
versatile stitch. Sew them side-by-side for a pretty trim. By piggy-backing them
one on top of the other, a long strip will form that can be used as a designer
type scarf or belt. By
sewing these strips together,
you'll make a fabric that can be worked into the width of a stole or blanket.
Monochromatic color schemes are striking, but multi-color versions have a
charming appeal.
For the practice piece you will need a
small amount of worsted weight yarn and an H/5mm hook. Don't worry too much
about gauge, just don't work too loose or too tight.
I have also put together a photo tutorial at the end of the pattern to help you visualize what the rows look like as you crochet them.Instructions:
Row 1: Ch 13, dc in the 9th
ch from the hook, ch 4, sc into the last ch. Turn. You should have a piece that
looks like 2 empty squares.
Row 2: Ch 3(counts as the first dc), pushing your stitches close to each other, 9 dc in the first loop, dc in the dc, 9 dc in the last loop, dc into the top of the 3rd ch of row 1. Turn
(You will have 21 dc)
Row 3 : Ch 5 (counts as the first dc and ch-2), skip the next dc, dc in the next dc, *ch 2, skip next dc, dc in the next dc, rep from * 7 more times, ch 2, dc in the top of the turning ch-3. Turn. (You will have 10 spaces.)
Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), *3 dc in next ch-2 space, dc in
next dc, rep from * 8 more times, 3 dc in last space, dc in 3rd ch of beg ch-5. Turn. (You will have 41 dc)
Row 5: Ch 5 (counts as the first dc and ch-2), skip the next dc, dc in the next dc, *ch 2, skip next dc, dc in the next dc, rep from *16 more times, ch 2, dc in the top of the turning ch-3. Turn. (You will have 20 spaces and 21 dc) Do Not Turn. Fasten off leaving an 8 inch end for sewing if you are going to make additional scallops in alternating colors. If you are making the same color for each motif, don't leave a length as it is easier to join them later with a separate length.
Second Vertical Scallop
Row 1: With first scallop facing you,
sl st in the 9th dc of the first scallop, ch1, sc in the same st, ch
4, skip next dc, dc in center dc ( the 11th), ch 4, skip next dc, sc
in next dc, sl st into each ch of the next ch-2 space, sl st in next dc. Turn.
(You will have 2 spaces)
Row 2: 10 dc in the ch-4 space, dc in next dc, 10 dc in the last ch-4 space, sl st in the next dc of previous scallop, sl st each ch of the next ch-2 space, sl st in next dc. Turn (You will have 21 dc)
Row 3: Ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in 3rd dc, *ch 2, skip next dc, dc in next dc, rep from * 7 more times, ch 2, sl st in the next dc of previous scallop, sl st into each ch of the next ch-2 space, sl st in next dc. Turn. (You will have 10 spaces)
Row 4: : Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), *3 dc in next ch-2 space of the scallop, dc in next dc, rep from * 8 more times, 3 dc in last space, sl st in the next dc of previous scallop, sl st each ch of the next ch-2 space, sl st in next dc. Turn. (You will have 41 dc)
Row 5: Ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in 3rd dc, *ch 2, skip next dc, dc in next dc, rep from * 7 more times, ch 2, sl st in the next dc of previous scallop. Fasten off leaving a length for sewing. Do Not Turn (You will have 20 spaces with 4 unworked spaces on each side.)
Third and each addition Vertical
Scallop
Rows 1-5: Sl st into the second dc before the center dc of the previous scallop. Rep rows 1-5 of Second Vertical Scallop.
Make the strips as long as you wish.
Then using the lengths of yarn, whip stitch the units together. Weave in all
yarn tails.
