Jackie O's Pillbox Hat!!!


If you like the retro look, this hat is made to order just for you! Doubled yarn makes this a speedy item and it comes in two sizes!

PILLBOX HAT

Materials: Red Heart Super Saver one skein either 5 oz multi or 7 oz solid in color of choice

Crochet Hook size I’5.5mm for small or K/6.5mm for large

Gauge: Yarn is used double: with I hook for small: 4 popcorns and 4 dc =3 inches

2 popcorn rounds = 1 ¾ inches

With K hook for large: 1 popcorn and I dc = 1 inch

1 popcorn round = 1 inch

CROWN –

1ST ROW: Holding two strands of yarn together ch 10, 1 sc in second st from hook, 1 sc in each of next 4 sts of chain, 1 hdc in next st as follows: yarn over hook, draw up a loop in next st of chain, yarn over hook and through all 3 loops on hook, an hdc in next st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts.

2ND ROW: Ch 3, turn, working in back strand of sts only (the entire crown is worked in back strand of sts) work skip first dc, 1 dc in next dc, an hdc in each of next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of remaining 5 sc.

3RD ROW: Turn, 1 sc in each of first 5 sc, an hdc in each of next 2 hdc, 1 dc in next dc, 1 dc in top st of turning ch. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows 11 more times;

Repeat 2nd row once more. Break off, leaving an 8-inch end.

Thread a darning needle with this end, insert needle in each of the turning ch 1 sts at beginning of every other row. Draw these sts together, forming a circle; overcast last row to foundation ch of first row, thus forming a flat circle for crown

BAND –

1ST ROUND:

Holding right side of work toward you, join yarn with an sc over end dc of first row, sc over end st of same row as joining sc, (2 sc over turning ch of next row, sc over end dc of next row) 5 times, 2 sc over end st of each of next 2 rows, (sc over turning ch of next row, 2 sc over end dc of next row) 6 times, sc over end st of last row (40 sc in round).

2ND ROUND: Ch 1, turn, working in back strand of sts only work sc in each of 40 sc of last round.

3RD ROUND: Ch 3, turn, work a popcorn st in next sc as follows: 4 dc in next sc, drop loop from hook, insert hook in top of first dc of 4-dc group just made, also insert in the dropped loop, draw dropped loop through st on hook, ch 1 tightly, * dc in next sc, a popcorn st in next sc; repeat from * around, end with a sl st in top st of first ch 3 (there are 20 popcorn sts in round).

4TH ROUND: Ch 3, work a popcorn st in same st as sl st, * 1 dc in next popcorn st, a popcorn st in next dc; repeat from * around, end with skip last popcorn st, a s st in top st of first ch 3.

5TH ROUND: Same as 4th round.

6TH ROUND: Ch 3, a popcorn st in same st as sl st, * (dc in next popcorn st, a popcorn st in next dc) 4 times, skip a popcorn st, dc in next dc, skip a popcorn st, a popcorn st in next dc; repeat from * around, end with dc in next popcorn st, a popcorn st in next dc, skip last popcorn st, a sl st in top st of first ch 3 (17 popcorns in round). NOTE: I did not decrease any stitches, but just continued the same as in 4th round. See what works for you.

7TH ROUND: Same as 4th round.

8TH ROUND: Ch 1, hdc in same st as sl st, * 2hdc in next popcorn st, hdc in next dc; repeat from * around, end with 1 sc in last popcorn st, a sl st in first sc; fasten off.
